We assumed that mountain biking would be unfair to the soggy trails, hence headed over to Daisy Hills <em>sans<\/em> bikes, intending to do some trampling around the walking trails there. On the way we found the day&#8217;s first surprise: A Noisy Miner nest, fairly close to the park, clearly with eggs in them &#8212; the mother wouldn&#8217;t leave the nest for more than a couple of minutes.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_364\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-364\" style=\"width: 950px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fractalthoughts.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=364\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-364\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-364\" title=\"Noisy Miner on Nest\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fractalthoughts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Noisy-Miner-on-Nest-950x632.jpg\" alt=\"Noisy Miner on Nest\" width=\"950\" height=\"632\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-364\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Noisy Miner on Nest<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Then, an extremely photogenic young kookaburra sat just outside the Koala Centre, totally ignoring the people standing around it and pointing cameras.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_365\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-365\" style=\"width: 950px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fractalthoughts.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=365\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-365\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-365\" title=\"Kookaburra\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fractalthoughts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Kookaburra-950x633.jpg\" alt=\"Kookaburra\" width=\"950\" height=\"633\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-365\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kookaburra<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Unusually, the Koala Centre was full of visitors, many with small children. I suppose even the koalas couldn&#8217;t sleep through that, hence the unusual activity:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_370\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-370\" style=\"width: 950px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fractalthoughts.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=370\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-370\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-370\" title=\"Koala on the Move\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fractalthoughts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Koala-on-the-Move-950x633.jpg\" alt=\"Koala on the Move\" width=\"950\" height=\"633\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-370\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Unusually, this koala had somewhere it needed to be.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We slowly moved back into the direction of our car, via some crows that were arguing loudly about a scrap of food.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_367\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-367\" style=\"width: 950px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fractalthoughts.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=367\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-367\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-367\" title=\"Crow in Flight\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fractalthoughts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Crow-in-Flight-950x633.jpg\" alt=\"Crow in Flight\" width=\"950\" height=\"633\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-367\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Crow in Flight<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Then, on the edge of the picnic area, a kangaroo! More to the point, a kangaroo with a joey in its pouch! This is the first time we&#8217;ve seen one since Lysterfield Lake Park in Melbourne four years ago. Question. What does one do if there is only a single human there, and he&#8217;s asleep? Unfortunately I didn&#8217;t get the shot when the boy woke up with a start, staring directly at the kangaroo. It&#8217;s hard to say who got the bigger shock. It was hilarious to watch from a distance.
